Mold you can't see

10/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in the most unnoticeable places. Ensure you are regularly checking the following areas of your home.

-Dishwasher: Mold loves warm and moist areas. If your dishwasher were to leak during the rinse cycle it very well could cause mold to grow, and quickly. It is a great idea the pull out your dishwasher and check the area behind and to the sides. Another great idea is to remove the dishwasher’s kick plate while the dishwasher is running and check for active leaks.

-Water Heater: Checking for mold around your water heater sounds much easier than checking around the dishwasher. Unfortunately, nothing is that easy. Water heaters can leak without homeowner’s noticing until it is too late. Make sure that all fitting on tightly, but not too tightly.

-In the crawlspace under bathrooms and kitchens. Sometimes pipes and fixtures can leak into places we cannot see from inside the home. It is a great idea to get in the crawlspace and look at the subfloor and framing below the bathtub(s) and kitchen sink(s). This is the type of leak you should be most worried about. A leak in the crawlspace can go unnoticed, to the extent that the materials would have to rot away before you even noticed.
